In Caring for Our Health, We Miss What Is Killing Us

 We count calories, choose organic foods, and filter our water. But no one warned us that plastic ceased to be just packaging long ago.



Plastic, which has surrounded us since the mid-20th century, has quietly become a permanent part of our daily lives. Today, it has become part of us in the most literal sense. Microscopic particles have been identified in human blood, lungs, and reproductive tissues. Now, researchers are finding them inside neurons.

On February 24, 2026, a conference took place at the European Parliament that received little coverage from mainstream media outlets. Scientists, medical specialists, and policymakers gathered to address nanoplastics — particles so minute that they penetrate biological barriers previously impenetrable to environmental pollutants.


Since the mid-1900s, humanity has produced over 9 billion metric tons of plastic. It became indispensable in medicine, aviation, cosmetics, and food supply chains. Yet, less than 10 percent of this vast volume has ever been recycled. The remainder did not simply disappear. We discarded it into the oceans believing it was out of sight, only for it to return in an invisible form.

John Ahn, a U.S. researcher, describes the process:

“Plastic doesn’t vanish; it changes scale. And as the scale changes, so does the nature of its interaction with the environment. Today, these particles are everywhere: in our food, our water, and even the air we breathe.”

Nanoplastics are thousands of times smaller than microplastics. They are so small that living cells fail to recognize them as foreign matter, allowing them to pass directly inside.

Impact on the Nervous System

The most alarming findings concern more than just the lungs or bloodstream. Neurobiochemist Alexander Masny explained at the conference that nanoplastics can directly interfere with neural functioning:

“Neuronal activity can experience disruptions: a neuron may fire prematurely or fail to transmit signals when needed.”

What does this mean in practical terms? Impairments in memory, concentration, and coordination, alongside potential links to neurological conditions that the scientific community is only beginning to investigate thoroughly.

We do not yet possess the complete picture. However, researchers emphasize that time is not on our side; the window for understanding the scope and taking meaningful action is rapidly narrowing.

Nanoplastics are not a distant ecological threat belonging to future generations. They are already inside us. While research funding catches up and institutions gradually acknowledge the full scope of the issue, personal awareness remains our primary line of defense.

Do not accept claims blindly, and do not dismiss them lightly. Seek to understand how your body functions, how the environment shifts, and how decisions affecting public health are made. A well-informed individual is far harder to deceive, and someone who asks informed questions cannot easily be silenced.

The conference at the European Parliament “Nanoplastics: Hidden Connections and Emerging Risks” demonstrated that scientists are speaking out. The remaining question is whether we are listening.
